Now in its seventh edition, the MiraTone Festival and Academy – founded by violinist Miranda Liu – has become one of Central Europe’s most vibrant classical music events. Each year, it brings together internationally acclaimed artists and passionate young musicians in the heart of Budapest.
This special concert highlights musical dialogue between Slovakia and Hungary, reflecting the MiraTone Festival’s commitment to cultural exchange and regional collaboration. The first half presents two Hungarian premieres that place the double bass in a soloistic spotlight: Caprice by Daniel Rumler, a dazzling and rhapsodic work dedicated to his colleague Ján Krigovský, and Ilja Zeljenka’s Concertino for double bass and string orchestra, rich in lyrical depth and vivid orchestral color. Béla Bartók’s lively and evocative Romanian Folk Dances bring the first half to a folkloric and rhythmically charged close.
In the second half, we turn to Franz Schubert’s monumental String Quartet in D minor, known as Death and the Maiden. Drawing on his own earlier Lied, Schubert spins a series of haunting variations that serve as the emotional core of the quartet. This dramatic and deeply personal work stands as one of the great masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire—an unflinching meditation on mortality and the human condition, conveyed with unforgettable poignancy and power.
