Budapest Dance Theatre: Toldi

János Arany’s epic poem is an enduring classic of Hungarian literature, with turns of phrases that are still parts of common parlance, and a hero who has been revived in opera, animated film, physical theatre production and monodrama.

Current events

But do we know the work well enough? – ask the creators of Budapest Dance Theatre. What is certain is that, compared to the ambitious works of János Arany’s contemporaries, like Sándor Petőfi’s John the Valiant and Imre Madách’s The Tragedy of Man, Toldi has been given the dance treatment less often. The choreographers, Alexandra Sághy and Attila Tókos are convinced that the world of Toldi can be made compelling for today’s young generation through the formal idiom of contemporary dance theatre, with a production that captures the imagination with the fusion of prose, dance, music and film.
