The min'yō, the traditional folk song of Japan has all but disappeared from living lore, but Tokyo-based band Minyo Crusaders come to the rescue. They mix traditional Japanese folk songs with Latin and Afrobeat, creating a unique sound that has gained traction in and out of Japan. Featuring interviews with renowned musicians like Chitose Hajime and Makoto Kubota, as well as critics like Peter Barakan and Yuichi Kishino, the film explores what the min'yō is, while recounting the band’s challenge to revive Japan’s traditional ‘songs of the people.
