Wings of Desire is Wenders’ “film of homecoming”, his first German work after eight years spent in America. Its protagonists are angels, invisible, benign beings that are present everywhere, who observe the world of humans from different viewpoints. One day, however, one of this heavenly host catches sight of Marion, the beautiful trapeze artiste, and he decides to become mortal for the sake of love. With its trench coat-wearing angels and unforgettable acting from Bruno Ganz, Peter Falk, Curt Bois and Solveig Dommartin, this Wenders classic was one of the finest films of the 1980s. It is a film of Berlin, a city divided, a poetic hymn to its residents.
