Breuer, Goldfinger and Other Magyars. Brutalist Architecture in and out of Hungary

Breuer, Goldfinger and Other Magyars. Brutalist Architecture in and out of Hungary

From March 13, 2026, a new temporary exhibition will be open to visitors at the Hungarian Museum of Architecture and Monument Protection Documentation Center (HMA MPDC) exhibition space in the Walter Rózsi Villa in Budapest. The exhibition examines the domestic influence of brutalism, one of the most controversial trends in late modern architecture, which has attracted increasing interest in recent years among both professionals and the wider public.

The exhibition, entitled "Breuer, Goldfinger and Other Magyars. Brutalist Architecture in and out of Hungary," focuses on research conducted at MÉM MDK in recent years. During this research, hundreds of buildings related to the period were identified, of which more than 120 were documented in detail with photographs. The work was supplemented by site visits, archival and literature research, and interviews with designers and experts.

The exhibition places special emphasis on the work of two architects of Hungarian origin: Marcel Breuer, who studied at the Bauhaus and became world famous in the United States, and Ernő Goldfinger, who played a leading role in the post-war reconstruction of Great Britain. Through their life's work, the exhibition shows how the formal language and approach of brutalism appeared in Hungarian architecture.

In addition to the temporary exhibition on brutalist architecture, the exhibition venue itself is also of interest. Built in 1936 by architect József Fischer and engineer Eszter Pécsi, the villa is an outstanding example of interwar residential architecture and at the same time Pest's only Modern villa open to the public.
